The Espresso Plate Table is the most economical way into the dark-top family. A charcoal top in a warm timber band stands on matte black steel columns over a flat rectangular steel plate: one column for the square two-top, two columns joined to one long plate for the rectangle.
Plate bases are the quiet professionals of restaurant tables. A flat steel plate puts its weight at floor level, has no arms to trip over and is easy to mop around. The only rule is size: a plate that is too small for the top will tip, so we set the plate at roughly 60–70% of the top's narrow dimension and keep the overhang at each end controlled.
The top is supplied in sintered stone or high-pressure laminate; both read as the same charcoal colour, and the timber band protects the edge from chair-back damage. The band can be specified in a lighter oak tone for daytime cafés, or in walnut for evening rooms.
The same table is available at counter height (36 in) with a heavier plate.
